Revision Spine Surgery Procedures in New Jersey
Revision spine surgery addresses problems that persist after a previous spine procedure or treats new conditions that develop later in the spine. Surgeons may recommend a second operation to relieve symptoms, address structural changes, or correct complications related to an earlier surgery.
Definition
What is Revision Spine Surgery?
Rather than describing a single procedure, revision spine surgery refers to a range of operations performed after an earlier procedure. The specific approach depends on the underlying problem, the area of the spine involved, and the findings from a patient’s evaluation.
Some revision procedures address hardware that has loosened, shifted, or requires replacement. Others treat a fusion that did not heal properly, recurrent nerve compression, or new problems that develop in the spine over time.
Because the spine has already undergone surgery, revision procedures often require more detailed planning and a careful surgical approach.
How do you know if you need Revision Spine Surgery?
Revision surgery may be considered when symptoms persist or recur after a prior procedure or when new spine problems develop that require surgical treatment.
Imaging studies, a physical examination, and a review of prior treatment help decide whether another operation may be beneficial.
Common reasons for revision surgery include:
- Ongoing pain after a previous spine surgery
- Hardware failure, loosening, or breakage visible on imaging tests
- Pseudarthrosis (a spinal fusion that did not heal successfully)
- Adjacent segment disease (degeneration affecting a spinal level next to a prior fusion)
- New nerve compression or symptoms after an initial period of recovery
- Progressive spinal deformity or instability after prior surgery
- Infection or other complications that require additional surgical treatment

Recovery
What is recovery like after Revision Spine Surgery?
Recovery depends on the specific procedure performed and the condition being treated. Many patients spend only a short time in the hospital before returning home, while others may require a longer stay.
Because revision surgery involves an area that has already undergone treatment, healing may progress more gradually than it does after a first-time procedure. Some patients return to lighter activities or work within a few weeks, while others need several months before resuming most of their usual routines.
We may also recommend physical therapy to help improve strength, mobility, and function throughout the recovery process.

Frequently asked questions about Revision Spine Surgery
Can scar tissue from my first surgery cause symptoms?
Yes. Scar tissue can sometimes form around nearby nerves and contribute to pain, numbness, or other nerve-related symptoms. Not all scar tissue causes problems, but it may play a role in some cases.
During the evaluation process, we review MRI scans and other imaging studies to determine whether scar tissue may be contributing to your symptoms and whether additional treatment should be considered.
How do you determine what caused my symptoms to return?
We review your medical history, current symptoms, and earlier spine procedures. We also perform a physical examination and obtain updated imaging studies, such as MRI scans, CT scans, and X-rays, to evaluate the spine, assess prior fusion sites, and examine existing hardware.
Nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG) may also help identify the source of symptoms and confirm whether a nerve is involved. This information helps us determine why symptoms returned and whether additional treatment may be beneficial.
How does recovery compare to a first-time procedure?
Recovery after revision spine surgery may progress more gradually since treatment is performed in an area that has already been operated on. However, recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure performed, the condition being treated, and the patient’s overall health.
Some patients find their recovery is similar to or even smoother than their first-time procedure, particularly when minimally invasive techniques can be used.
Is revision surgery riskier than the original procedure?
Revision spine surgery can be more complex than a first-time procedure because the surgeon must work around scar tissue, existing hardware, and changes from the initial operation. However, the level of risk depends on the procedure being performed, the condition being treated, and the patient’s overall health.
Whenever appropriate, minimally invasive techniques may be used to reduce disruption to surrounding tissues and support recovery.
What’s the likelihood of needing another revision in the future?
Many patients do not require additional surgery after a successful revision procedure. However, the spine continues to change with age, and factors such as overall spine health, the development of adjacent segment disease, and other degenerative conditions can influence the likelihood of future treatment.
Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive and motion-preserving techniques to help maintain spinal function and reduce stress on surrounding levels.
Why didn’t my first surgery fully resolve the problem?
Several factors can lead to ongoing symptoms after spine surgery. In some cases, the original procedure may not fully address every source of pain. In others, a different part of the spine may develop problems over time and begin causing new symptoms.
A fusion that does not heal properly, hardware-related complications, or changes in spinal alignment can also contribute to persistent discomfort. Every case is different, so a thorough evaluation is often needed to determine why symptoms remain and whether additional treatment may help.
Will I need additional fusion or hardware?
Not always. The need for additional fusion or hardware depends on the reason revision surgery is being performed. Some procedures focus on correcting a specific problem without extending a fusion or adding new instrumentation.
In other cases, replacing existing hardware, extending a fusion, or adding additional support may provide better stability and help address the underlying condition.
Real reviews from our past patients
“Dr. J was attentive, listened to me and showed that he truly cared about my problems. He explained in details and offered me expert opinions. I love that he treats patients as individual and truly listens.”
Bernice
“After being unhappy with my spine surgeon, I found Dr. J. He explained exactly what was wrong with me, made a game plan, and had his team help out in scheduling. Once he found where the problem was, he got me scheduled, did excellent work, and I was home in a couple days. The scar is WAY SMALLER than my original surgery, which wasn’t even as big! He really is a minimally invasive expert and my recovery was way faster!”
Eddie
“I’ve had 5 different operations on my back in the last decade. Dr. J did number 6. His scar was the smallest, least amount of pain, and for the first time after any surgery I went home the same day. Maybe I’m just getting used to surgery lol!”
Steve W.
“No doubt in my mind Dr. Jeyamohan saved my life.”

“Thank You from the bottom of my heart for getting my active lifestyle back- I’m so happy with the outcome- thank u for being honest about the pain I would experience in the first month of recovery- your bedside manner in the hospital was excellent – your PA Andrea was amazing as well- I would recommend Evergreen Health to everyone and my team of docs was super- Thank U Dr J, Dr Nora, and Dr Ting!! Feels amazing to be standing tall with great posture everyday I’m getting stronger”

“Took the time to explain my pictures and what was wrong with me, and gave me many different options. Answered every single one of my questions and even a few over the phone. Went home the same day and on my way to a full recovery! Office is clean, bright, and everyone was super friendly and helpful! Andrea his assistant has been a treasure!”
Verified Patient
“Incredibly thorough, took his time to explain and answer all my questions. Gave me plenty of options. I probably visited with him three or four times before committing to surgery, never once did he rush me. Saw me every day in the hospital, walked with me. I’m so thankful I had the surgery with him. I saw two other spine surgeons who didn’t even want to take on such a complicated operation but Dr. J did incredible work and I’m back to walking on my own! I don’t even need a cane anymore”

“First, the office was not good. Getting an appointment, scheduling, paperwork, was a nightmare. But once I got in to see Dr. J, it was smooth sailing! He got me the tests I needed, talked to me about treatment options, and helped me set up an injection. We talked about different surgeries, got me scheduled, did great work, and made sure I had follow-up appointments. I’m back to the farm ahead of schedule and back to work. If only I could have got in to see him sooner.”

“I have to be honest here and own up. I saw three different spine surgeons and was worried “Dr. Jey” as everyone calls him was too young. I went with someone else who fused three levels in my back. I did horribly with lots of complications. After getting over all my issues, I swallowed my pride and went back to Dr. Jey. He never made me feel bad and graciously took a look at everything, ordered more tests, and showed me what was going on. Bad news, he says he couldn’t undo the fusion. Worse news, it’s now an even bigger operation to fix, and he was honest and said the best we can do is try to get me…”

“My experience was excellent. Dr J is very knowledgeable explained everything in a simplified way that made me very comfortable. His staff went above and beyond answer any question I had No matter what the question was. I can’t thank Dr J and his staff enough For helping me get through this spine Injury.”

“I am a 45 year old male who led an active lifestyle when a back injury changed my life. I went from working and being active with my 4 children to suddenly I couldn’t make any movement without excruciating pain. The type of pain I can’t even explain in words. I went to see Dr. Jeyamohan on the referral of my sister who is a physician as well. When I walked into the office the team had already looked at my MRI and explained to me in honest terms that we had an emergency situation on our hands and that delaying surgery was simply not an option. Dr. Jeyamohan Made calls and got me scheduled for emergency back surgery right…”
