Why police work is hard on your spine

Police work loads the spine in ways that add up shift after shift. The duty belt and vest put 25 to 30 pounds on your hips and lower back before you leave the station, and that weight rides with you all day. Hours behind the wheel of a cruiser hold the lower back in a fixed, seated position, which is hard on a spine over a long shift.

Then the job turns without warning, and a foot pursuit or a struggle during an arrest can drive a sharp force through a back already working under load.

Over the years that steady wear and the occasional acute injury combine, and stiffness can turn into pain that follows you home.

Built around your duty

Treatment planned around your shift

Good spine care for an officer has to account for more than the injury. It has to fit a rotating schedule, light-duty assignments, and the fitness-for-duty standard you eventually have to clear.

We plan treatment with all of that in view. When symptoms can be managed without surgery, we work to keep you functional and on a workable assignment while the spine settles.

When a procedure is needed, we map recovery against the duty you are returning to, so the steps from light duty back to full active duty are clear from the start.

Why Police Officers in NJ choose the Jey Institute

We treat officers who need to get back to full duty, not just back to work.

Getting an officer back on the street is a different goal than getting someone back to a desk, and the plan has to reflect that. We start from the assignment you are returning to and the standard you have to meet, then build the treatment and recovery around it. That means conservative care first when it is safe, clear documentation from the first visit, and a return-to-work path that moves in stages rather than all at once.

Here’s how we help officers plan spine treatment:

  • Deep experience with law enforcement spine injuries
  • Understanding of fitness-for-duty requirements and qualification standards
  • Workers’ comp coordination from the first visit
  • Tiered return-to-work planning (light duty to full active duty)
  • Direct communication with PBA reps, attorneys, and pension administrators
  • Surgeons who understand the difference between desk recovery and full-patrol recovery

You might not need surgery

Back or neck pain after years on the job does not automatically mean surgery. Plenty of officers improve with care that never reaches an operating room, especially when the problem is caught before it damages a nerve. The first step is figuring out what is actually generating the pain, whether it is a strained muscle, an irritated joint, a worn disc, or a nerve under pressure.

Once that is clear, treatment can target the real source. Physical therapy, injections, activity changes, and pain management resolve a large share of cases.

Surgery enters the conversation when the pain keeps interfering with the job despite good non-surgical care, when it is getting worse, or when imaging shows a problem a procedure can fix. Even then, the goal is the least invasive option that gets you back to full duty.

Most common conditions experienced by Police Officers

Officers tend to see a recognizable set of spine problems, some from the slow grind of gear and seat time, others from a single bad moment on a call. The conditions below are the ones we evaluate most often in law enforcement.

Disc Herniation

Sciatica

Sciatica describes pain along the sciatic nerve. The pain from sciatica usually branches from your lower back down through your buttock and leg.

Comprehensive spinal health management

Every injury is different, so we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. We build a plan around you, and we always start with the least invasive option.

Pain Management

When conservative treatment does not provide sufficient relief, targeted procedures may help address specific pain generators.

Non-invasive procedures

Get back on patrol faster than you'd think

Most officers assume a spine problem means a long road back, or the end of street duty altogether. However, that’s rarely how it goes anymore.

Minimally invasive techniques have changed what recovery looks like, with smaller incisions, less muscle disruption, and a faster return to activity than the open surgeries officers picture.

Timing depends on the injury and the procedure, but for many it is measured in weeks, not seasons.

Worried about the cost of surgery?

Cost keeps a lot of officers from getting care they need, usually because insurance is confusing and they assume the worst. Our team walks through your benefits in plain terms before anything moves forward, so you know what to expect. For many patients, the out-of-pocket cost ends up far lower than they feared.

You don’t put a price on health, and neither do we. If you have insurance, come in and let us review it with you. In most cases we can find a path that works, and you will have a clear picture of any costs before you decide on treatment.

Frequently asked questions from Police Officers

Can I return to full active duty or only light duty?

We believe in a safe, staged return. We start most patients at light duty and progress them slowly until they are back at full duty.

How does this affect my pension and disability options?

We provide extensive documentation about your condition and recovery, as needed, to your union leaders and attorney so your rights are always protected.

How long will I be off the road?

Depending on the intervention, anywhere from three months to up to a year.

Will I be able to pass my fitness-for-duty exam after surgery?

Once fully healed, many officers do. We will help with the paperwork and supportive documentation for accommodation until you are able to return to full duty.

Will I be able to safely wear gear and perform full duties long-term?

Yes. Once fully healed, many officers go back to wearing their gear and performing their full and usual duties.

“After being unhappy with my spine surgeon, I found Dr. J. He explained exactly what was wrong with me, made a game plan, and had his team help out in scheduling. Once he found where the problem was, he got me scheduled, did excellent work, and I was home in a couple days. The scar is WAY SMALLER than my original surgery, which wasn’t even as big! He really is a minimally invasive expert and my recovery was way faster!”

“I’ve had 5 different operations on my back in the last decade. Dr. J did number 6. His scar was the smallest, least amount of pain, and for the first time after any surgery I went home the same day. Maybe I’m just getting used to surgery lol!”

“Took the time to explain my pictures and what was wrong with me, and gave me many different options. Answered every single one of my questions and even a few over the phone. Went home the same day and on my way to a full recovery! Office is clean, bright, and everyone was super friendly and helpful! Andrea his assistant has been a treasure!”

Review from Healthgrades

“Incredibly thorough, took his time to explain and answer all my questions. Gave me plenty of options. I probably visited with him three or four times before committing to surgery, never once did he rush me. Saw me every day in the hospital, walked with me. I’m so thankful I had the surgery with him. I saw two other spine surgeons who didn’t even want to take on such a complicated operation but Dr. J did incredible work and I’m back to walking on my own! I don’t even need a cane anymore”

Review from Healthgrades

“First, the office was not good. Getting an appointment, scheduling, paperwork, was a nightmare. But once I got in to see Dr. J, it was smooth sailing! He got me the tests I needed, talked to me about treatment options, and helped me set up an injection. We talked about different surgeries, got me scheduled, did great work, and made sure I had follow-up appointments. I’m back to the farm ahead of schedule and back to work. If only I could have got in to see him sooner.”

Review from Healthgrades

“I have to be honest here and own up. I saw three different spine surgeons and was worried “Dr. Jey” as everyone calls him was too young. I went with someone else who fused three levels in my back. I did horribly with lots of complications. After getting over all my issues, I swallowed my pride and went back to Dr. Jey. He never made me feel bad and graciously took a look at everything, ordered more tests, and showed me what was going on. Bad news, he says he couldn’t undo the fusion. Worse news, it’s now an even bigger operation to fix, and he was honest and said the best we can do is try to get me…”

“I am a 45 year old male who led an active lifestyle when a back injury changed my life. I went from working and being active with my 4 children to suddenly I couldn’t make any movement without excruciating pain. The type of pain I can’t even explain in words. I went to see Dr. Jeyamohan on the referral of my sister who is a physician as well. When I walked into the office the team had already looked at my MRI and explained to me in honest terms that we had an emergency situation on our hands and that delaying surgery was simply not an option. Dr. Jeyamohan Made calls and got me scheduled for emergency back surgery right…”
